Aqara Automations 2.0: A Smarter Way to Control Your Home
Smart homes are all about convenience, comfort, and making everyday life run more smoothly. At Aqara, we’ve always believed that technology should adapt to you — not the other way around. That’s why our mission has been to build a platform that feels natural, personal, and effortless, whether you’re automating a single light or an entire home ecosystem.
But as our community of users has grown, so too have the demands on what a smart home can do. Many of you have told us: “I love my automations, but I wish I could make them just a little smarter, a little more specific.” You wanted more flexibility. You wanted more control. And most importantly, you wanted a system that could respond to real-life scenarios, not just simple on/off triggers.
That’s exactly what we’ve built with Automations 2.0.
This brand-new update in the Aqara Home app takes the heart of what makes Aqara so powerful — flexible automation — and makes it even better. It introduces smarter logic, deeper customisation, bulk device actions, a fresh new interface, and even multi-user location awareness with Geofencing 2.0 (Lab). From “IF” conditions that respond to weather and device states, to sequential triggers that unlock endless possibilities from a single button, to geofencing that knows when you or your family arrive or leave — Automations 2.0 opens up an entirely new level of intelligence in your smart home.
And the best part? This isn’t just for advanced users. Whether you’re just starting out with one or two devices, or you’ve already built a whole-home setup, Automations 2.0 makes it easier and more intuitive to create routines that genuinely fit your lifestyle.
In short: your smart home just got a major upgrade.
Let’s take a look at what’s new, how it works, and why it’s going to change the way you experience your home.
Why Automations 2.0 Matters
Until now, automations in the Aqara Home app relied mainly on IF / THEN logic. For example:
-
IF motion is detected, THEN turn on the lights.
-
IF a door opens, THEN send a notification.
Simple and effective – but a bit limiting if you wanted more nuance.
Automations 2.0 takes this further by introducing new logic, new triggers, and smarter condition handling. It means your smart home doesn’t just respond, it responds intelligently – adapting to weather, time, device state, or even button press sequences.
Think of it as giving your smart home a more human touch, where context really matters.
1. Smarter Triggers with IF & State Conditions
The biggest change comes from the addition of state-based IF conditions.
For example:
-
WHEN the sun rises on weekdays,
-
IF the weather is sunny,
-
THEN open the curtains.
Without the IF condition, curtains would always open at sunrise. With it, the automation now feels smarter – because let’s be honest, no one wants curtains open on a grey rainy morning.
This small addition means you can tailor automations to be more specific, giving you control that matches real-life situations.
2. A Cleaner, Easier-to-Use Interface
The app itself has had a makeover too. With Automations 2.0, the UI is more streamlined, less cluttered, and better organised.
-
Accessories are grouped by room, so you can find devices faster.
-
Automations now display graphics of the devices involved, so you know exactly what’s included at a glance.
-
The WHEN/THEN setup flow is easier to follow, making automation building less of a chore and more of a creative process.
This means even if you’re new to Aqara, it’s now easier than ever to get started.
3. NOT Logic for Greater Flexibility
Automations 2.0 also introduces NOT conditions, so you can build rules based on what isn’t happening.
Example:
-
WHEN the sun rises,
-
IF it’s NOT raining,
-
THEN open the curtains.
This level of control means your automations only run when it truly makes sense, giving you fewer false triggers and a more personalised smart home experience.
4. Bulk Device Selection for Faster Setup
Anyone who’s ever had to add devices one by one to a scene will know it can be tedious. Automations 2.0 fixes this with Batch Control.
Now you can select multiple devices at once and add them to your THEN action. Want all the lights in your home to turn on together? Just bulk select them. Done.
It’s a small improvement, but it saves time and makes automation building far more efficient.
5. Sequential Triggering – Unlock More from One Button
Here’s where things get clever. Automations 2.0 lets you add sequences of triggers to activate specific automations.
For example, you can set a wireless switch to recognise:
-
Single press → Double press → Single press
…and assign it to launch a completely different scene than just a single press would.
This means one switch or button can now perform multiple roles, depending on the sequence you use. Perfect for small spaces where you don’t want lots of switches cluttering the wall, or if you just enjoy building creative routines.
6. Sunrise & Sunset Triggers with Intervals
Time-based automations have also levelled up. Instead of just fixed times, you can now use sunrise and sunset as trigger points.
Even better, you can add intervals before or after – up to 4 hours.
For example:
-
Turn the outdoor lights on 30 minutes before sunset.
-
Open the curtains 1 hour after sunrise.
-
Pre-warm the home 2 hours before sunrise in winter.
These natural rhythms make your home feel more in sync with your lifestyle.
7. Geofencing 2.0 (Lab)
Automations 2.0 also introduces Geofencing 2.0 (Lab), a powerful new way to make your home respond automatically to where you are.
Unlike basic geofencing that tracks a single device, Geofencing 2.0 supports multi-user, multi-device detection. That means your home can react differently depending on who is coming or going.
For example:
-
The heating can turn on when the first family member arrives home.
-
Security devices can arm themselves only after the last person leaves.
-
Lights and curtains can adjust as soon as your phone detects you’ve entered the neighbourhood.
This adds a whole new level of intelligence and convenience, ensuring your smart home is truly in sync with your household’s movements.
How This All Comes Together
Let’s imagine a morning routine with Automations 2.0:
-
At sunrise on weekdays, IF the weather is sunny, your curtains open.
-
15 minutes later, your smart plug powers up the kettle.
-
IF your motion sensor detects movement in the kitchen, the lights turn on, but ONLY if it’s still dark outside.
-
If you press your wireless button with a double press, your favourite playlist starts on the speakers.
That’s the power of Automations 2.0 – layering logic so your smart home feels more natural and responsive to you.
Future-Proofing Your Smart Home
Automations 2.0 isn’t just about new features – it’s about future-proofing the Aqara ecosystem. By giving users smarter tools, we’re paving the way for even more advanced AI-driven automations down the line.
